Love Actually

Biblical Truth

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.

   Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
   Love doesn’t strut,
   Doesn’t have a swelled head,
   Doesn’t force itself on others,
   Isn’t always "me first,"
   Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
   Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
   Puts up with anything,
   Trusts God always,
   Always looks for the best,
   Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be cancelled.

When I was an infant at my mother’s breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.

We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!

But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.

Ben’s Offering

Before I start, I’d like you to go visit this YouTube video and watch it. I’d embed it, but it’s been disabled. But please, go watch it, I’m not going anywhere, and this post will make a lot more sense once you do.

You’re back? Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

I recently headed over to my fiancée’s place when she was having a rough day, and I put this movie on – partly because it’s the only “chick flick” that I don’t mind watching, and partly because I thought it would be good to watch. Since then, this intro has stayed with me. Yes, Love is all around, if you look for it. But even more incredible is that God’s love is all around us.

This was demonstrated to me just recently, with the exciting news that a close friend had just been offered a job. Exciting news yes, but the more exciting news was that she had prayed about it that morning, and God had delivered. A small shower of God’s grace, to know that he is looking after her.

This passage of scripture, I’m sure you know well. It is probably THE most common bible reading at weddings, but I know it well, as it was my school’s reading when I was in years 8-10. And while yes, it is a wonderful description of what Love is/should be between humans, it is also a wonderful description of what God’s love for us is.

God’s love is patient, God’s love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. God’s Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. God’s Love never fails.

So today, try and find spots where you can see God’s Love in action in your life, and the lives of those around you.

  1. That love thing is true, but you have missed one point, Paul wrote that to people in Corinth that are already Christians. The verse you gave is not intended for people outside the Church of God that is in the bible, where Paul and other Apostles, and saints belong to, to which Jesus Christ is the Head of that Church. Because , if you are an outsider , you can’t possibly have that love which Paul was talking about.

You must remember that God is Love. You can’t love God if you will not obey the law of Christ. And one particular law is ” Abhor that which is evil, and cling to that whicht is good”, The Church of God is “good”. Now , if you make your own church, then you are not practicing “Love”, and you have no business preaching that “Love”.

I hope you got my point.

    1. Hi Dove, and thanks for your comment, however, I must respectfully disagree with you. While I can see where you’re coming from, I believe that Christ didn’t mean the Church to be inward looking. Just think of all the miracles Jesus performed on those that the Jewish tradition despised – the blind, the leprous, the paralytic. Think about the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus talking with the woman at the well.
We are made in God’s image, every one of us. From the poorest of the poor to the richest of the rich. From the person who has never come in contact with any kind of drug to the addict lying in the gutter. We are called to show them the love that God shows us, because God shows it to all of us, to every single person in the world.
And if that’s not enough, Matthew 28:19 tells us “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” – I think Jesus is clearly telling us to be on the look out for the unsaved, not to stay away from them, but to bring them into the Christian community, show them love, and bring them into the Love of God.

  2. In Matthew 28:19-20 -Jesus Christ was speaking to his 11 Apostles: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: TEACHING them to OBSERVE ALL THINGS whatsoever I have commanded you : and , lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

This is what is written in Matthew 28:19-20. Now, you must understand that Jesus Christ commanded these not to just anyone Remember that the 11 disciples did not DESIRED to be an Apostles, or even volunteers to be one. THEY ARE CHOSEN BY GOD.

Now, let us study your case, and of those so many who are eager to become an apostles, ministers, preachers, pastors. ARE YOU CHOSEN BY GOD ? I don’t think so. Do I judge you,? NO, I’m not judging you, I’m just telling you.
My answer is this: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (King James version)–All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, for INSTRUCTION in righteousness ; That the man of God maybe perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
And again; you said ; “I think Jesus is clearly telling us to be on the look out for the unsaved, not to stay away from them, but to bring them into the Christian community, show them love, and bring them into the love of God.”
You THINK ? So you are not sure. You are not sure of what you are doing. As for the unsaved, saved them from what ? from hell ? are you now a savior ? How can you saved those unsaved, when you yourself is not saved. How can you give them Holy Spirit, when you yourself has none? If you just gonna help these unsaved by giving them food, clothing, shelter, that is good, your shewing them love.. But preaching to them the word ,of God, man , that is another story ; leave the preaching to those chosen by God.

I hope you got the point.

    1. Using the same logic, You are not sure that I’m not chosen by God. But I’m not going to go into that here. Whether or not I have been chosen by God for ministry is between me, God, and the Church that I’ll be a minister in.

These thoughts that I post on here are just that, my thoughts. They are my reflections on these scriptures. I am young (only 23), and have not had any theological training. So what I write should be taken in that context. I am an imperfect being, and I will make mistakes, and I welcome comments to help discuss these readings.

As for being a saviour? I’m not the saviour, Jesus Christ is my saviour, and if these reflections help someone to want to find more out about him then that’s fantastic. But these are just a public record of my thoughts.

The wonderful thing about the Christian church today is that we have very many different forms of teaching and instruction. The Catholic church is very different to the Baptists, the Anglicans different to Hillsong. Yet they all allow people to know Christ, and to accept him into their lives. Just because you don’t agree with how one is done doesn’t mean that the work they do is any less valid.

  3. Ben Clapton,
Ben, when I said ” I don’t think so”, is very different from “He think so”. What I think had basis, and I am very sure about it. You can even challenge me about that, and I can defend it biblically( with the help of the Holy Spirit ) while what you think is without basis. You are NOT so sure of what JESUS is telling us. That is exactly one of the thought of yours that I want to correct, of your so many reflection of the bible, as you may call it.

Now another thing that bother me, is ” Just because you don’t agree with how one is done doesn’t mean that the work they do is any less valid”. You know what , you should study MORE EXTENSIVELY the bible., so will not say that again.
You must understand, that ALL SCRIPTURE is given by INSPIRATION OF GOD and is PROFITABLE for DOCTRINE, for REPROOF, for C O R R E C T I O N , for I N S T R U C T I O N in righteousness that the man of God MAY BE perfect, THOROUGHLY FURNISHED unto all good works. (II Timothy 3:16-17) .
And also, understand this verse: (Titus 1:11) whose mouth MUST BE STOPPED, who subvert whole households, TEACHING THINGS which they OUGHT NOT, for the sake of dishonest gain.
With these verses that I gave you, you must now understand why I am doing this. If I am ignorant of the word of God, I may not care. But it is not the case, God had given me the understanding of HIS WORD, and the duty that I MUST DO that goes with it.
So I hope you understand what I am trying to point out.
CHEER UP ! ! The Grace of the Lord, come upon you. If you are willing to be taught of God. His true Doctrine, not the doctrine of men.
As Jesus had said in John 7:17 ” If any man will do HIS WILL, he shall know of THE D O C T R I N E, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself”. For God word is sure, as it is written in Proverbs 8:7-9 ” For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. ALL THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH ARE IN RIGHTEOUSNESS; There is nothing FROWARD or PERVERSE in them. They are PLAIN to him that understandeth, and RIGHT to them that FIND KNOWLEDGE.”

Look now, ..Think ! God is calling you, NOT the calling which you wrongly perceived. UNDERSTAND THIS:
Turn ye at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.(Proverbs 1:23) BUT IF YOU REFUSE, this is the assurance of God, A curse : NONE OF THE WICKED SHALL UNDERSTAND.(Daniel 12:10) But if you heed to HIS CALL, He made this promise : THE WISE SHALL UNDERSTAND.(Daniel 12:10)
    So, what will it be?
