In our lives, there are certain areas that sometimes need refreshing. However, far too often, we will find ourselves caught up in the business – or busy-ness – of living, and won’t give time to refresh ourselves. Here’s a few things I sometimes do to refresh different areas of my life.
I love my coffee. And sometimes, I unwittingly have too much. There have been days where I have had four coffee’s before lunch – one in the morning, one when the rest of my team gets in, one for morning tea and one just before lunch. It doesn’t seem like a lot at the time, but eventually I realise that I have had far too much.
So sometimes, I need to refresh my palate. I have a glass of hot water instead. Now, I often hear people ask how hot water could be refreshing. But it is in a couple of ways. Firstly, water is water. It doesn’t matter whether it’s hot or cold, it still has the same refreshing qualities. Secondly, there is a social side of having a coffee (or tea) and having a hot drink – as opposed to a glass of cold water – helps fill that social side of it. I find that having a glass of water doesn’t quite do that but a cup of hot water does. Strange yes, but it works. I was skeptical when I first tried it, having heard about it before, and now I actually like it as an alternative for when I’ve had too much coffee – or when I fear I might have too much (I’ll often have a hot water when I get into work now as I know I’ll have a coffee an hour later when the rest of my team gets in).
It’s important to refresh your life at regular times. This could be taking time off work to have a lazy day, heading away for the weekend, or simply finding time to do something that you enjoy.
For me, I quite like finding time for the things I enjoy. I like playing video games, and when I can, I enjoy losing an hour or two plugging away at something. Currently, the game is BioShock 2, however, I am also enjoying NBA 2k11, and have also just downloaded Champions Online, which I might give a go as well.
I’m also enjoying playing in amateur Theatre musicals. I’ve just completed a run of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, and last year I did a season of Spamalot. It’s something I’m enjoying doing, but will only do one or two shows a year, because of the time committment. Heading into college, it’s now less likely that I’ll be able to do this as much, but if an opportunity arises, I shall certainly enjoy it.
It’s also important to make sure you only work as much as you’re supposed to. I’m lucky in that there’s not much reason in my job for me to work over time. However, when I do (for whatever reason, eg a Training day on a Saturday), I have to take that time off. I’ve been a little bit slack in taking those days off, so I’ve got a couple of days coming up where I’ll be off work on TOIL. However, it’s very important that you take that time off. I have a mate who was working 60 to 75 hours a week, and only getting paid for 40. He almost ran himself into the ground at two different jobs, doing the same thing. Thankfully, he realised what was happening, and is now working at a job where he can’t work past closing time, because there is nothing for him to do. He is very much enjoying this concept of “time off”
We all need a lift in our spiritual lives sometimes. Church is great, but sometimes we need a bit extra. You need to find time in your daily life to refresh yourself spiritually – whether that’s spending time in prayer, reading the bible, or one of my favourites – rocking out to praise and worship music. But sometimes, you need a bit extra. Spiritual retreats I have found often help me fill my cup to overflowing, and feed me and sustain me for a long time after the retreat has finished. For me, the retreat community I love is Chrysalis. However, that’s for me, and may not be for you. There are plenty out there – and you don’t have to go to the same one each time. Find one that looks interesting, go along and see what God will do for you.
